TAP Scholarship

TAP’s Juan Rodrigo Rodriguez Memorial Scholarship Fund was developed to honor the memory of Lance Cpl. Juan Rodriguez, who was kill in action January 13, 2005 in Iraq. Juan was a 23-year old Marine reservist assigned to Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 23rd Marines, based in Corpus Christi. After completing his basic training for the Marines in 2001, Juan went to work for L. Buffalo Pawn in Laredo. Bob Simpson, owner of L. Buffalo Pawn and long time member of TAP, remembers Juan as his hardest working, least complaining, and a most trustworthy employee. According to Mr. Simpson, when Juan was activated to serve his country, he did so proudly and with honor.

There are (4) $250.00 scholarships awarded annually.

Eligibility Criteria/ Qualifications:

  • Applicant must be a Texas High School senior or a full-time Texas College Student in good standing with the school/university.
  • Applicant must have a 2.75 GPA or higher
  • Special consideration will be given to one applicant that has an affiliation with the pawn industry. Please explain and attach as a separate document.
  • Please submit an essay of 200 words or less. The essay subject is: “How pawnshops are an asset to our community.” Essays will not be retunred and become the property of TAP for future publication in our newsletter. “The Texas Pawnbroker” and or TAP social media outlets.
  • Scholarship payments will be mailed directly to the University of College.
  • Deadline for application submission is April 1.
